How to Apply for a Director Identification Number (Director ID)
What is a Director ID?
A Director Identification Number (Director ID) is a unique identifier that directors of Australian companies must obtain. It helps prevent fraudulent identities being used in business operations. A Director ID is issued once and remains with the individual for life.
Who Needs a Director ID?
You need a Director ID if you are a director (or planning to become one) of:
- A company registered with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC)
- A corporate trustee of a self-managed super fund (SMSF)
- A charity or not-for-profit organisation registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)
- An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation
You do not need a Director ID if you are:
- A sole trader or partnership
- A company secretary but not a director
- Running a business as a trustee of a trust (unless the trustee is a company)
